Lemont

Currently sought after for recreational use, the waterway of the Illinois and Michigan canal encompassing Lemont was originally constructed to link the great lakes with the Mississippi River.

For higher education, there are a variety of opportunities within 10 miles of Lemont. The College of DuPage, the Joliet Junior College and Moraine Valley College are all two-year community colleges. Many of the nearby four-year universities are parochial private institutions, such as Benedictine University located in Lisle, the University of St. Francis located in Joliet and Trinity Christian College located in Palos Heights. There are also numerous colleges and universities in the Chicago area.

There are many shopping centers in and around the Lemont area, including the Lemont Plaza and the Historical Downtown with numerous unique shops and several boutiques. The Fox Valley Mall located in Aurora is just 16 miles away. Located in Joliet, the Jefferson Square Mall and the Oak Brook Center are both just 15 miles from Lemont.

The history of Lemont originated with construction of the Illinois and Michigan Canal. Later quarrying, railroad and canal employment brought many Irish, German, Polish and other European immigrants who chose to settle and remain in the area. Lemont was settled in 1836 and incorporated in 1873.

Lemont provides a wealth of recreational and leisure opportunities for both residents and visitors – from a peaceful day spent in the nearby forest preserves to scenic biking and hiking to championship golf courses to cultural and historical attractions. The Lemont Park District offers more than 500 recreational programs to both the young and old throughout the year. As for family friendly and community festivals, the Heritage Fest is held every July, with the Halloween Hoedown in October and Hometown Holiday in December.

The District's Centennial Center includes a swimming pool, tennis courts, fitness center, gymnasium and a Community Center. In addition to the 65 plus miles of hiking and biking trails, the Village has more than six miles of trails along the historic Illinois and Michigan canal.

Today, Lemont looks to the future and continues to grow. Active efforts are underway to continue to preserve the historic heritage of this community. These revitalization efforts allow both visitors and residents to experience small-town charm in a vibrant growing community.
